✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الرحمن
Ar-Rahman
✦ Why this name
The Most Merciful — ar-Rahman, the surah's first word. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the beauty of the Quran".
✦ When it came
It is addressed to both humans and jinn — the refrain is in the dual form, speaking to two kinds of creation at once.
✦ The story
The surah opens with a sequence that is itself a statement: *The Most Merciful. Taught the Quran. Created man. Taught him speech.* Teaching comes before creating. Mercy comes before everything.
Then it lists gifts — the sun and moon by calculation, the stars and trees bowing, the balance set so that you do not cheat with it, the earth laid for creatures, fruit, grain, fragrant plants, two seas that meet with a barrier between them, pearls and coral, ships like mountains at sea — and after each one, the question returns:
*"So which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?"*
Thirty-one times. When the Prophet ﷺ recited it to the jinn, they answered every repetition with *"none of Your favours, our Lord, do we deny."* And in the middle of all of it: *"Everyone upon it will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour."*
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 1-13
Mercy taught it
The Most Merciful, the Quran taught, humanity created, speech given — then the first refrain.
- AYAH 46-78
Two gardens, then two more
Gardens with spreading branches, flowing springs, fruit in pairs — and two more below them.
