Privacy Policy

Your worship is between you and Allah. It stays that way. This page explains exactly what Noor stores, why, and how to remove it.

Who we are

Noor (“Noor”, “we”, “us”) is a Muslim companion app and website that offers prayer times, Quran reading and recitation, duas, stories, reminders, and a conversational companion. This policy covers the Noor mobile app for Android and iOS, the website at getnoor.org, and the services behind them.

The data controller is the publisher of Noor, reachable at [email protected].

Information we collect

You can read the Quran, view prayer times, and browse duas and stories without an account. We collect the following:

Information you give us

  • Account details — your name and email address, and a phone number if you sign in with WhatsApp. Sign in is passwordless by default (a magic link or one-time code); if you set a password, we store only a salted hash of it, never the password itself.
  • Worship and progress data — prayer logs, habits, fasts, Quran reading position and memorisation progress, khatmah participation, planner entries, reflections, favourites, and the people you add to your dua list.
  • Messages to the companion— what you type in Noor's chat, and the short summaries Noor keeps so it can remember context between conversations.
  • Support messages — anything you send us by email.

Information collected automatically

  • Approximate or precise location — only if you grant location permission, and only to calculate prayer times and the qibla direction. We store your last known coordinates, place name, and time zone on your account so prayer reminders fire at the right moment; we do not keep a history of where you have been.
  • Push notification token — a device token issued by Expo/Google so we can deliver prayer and reminder notifications.
  • Technical and usage data — basic server logs (IP address, device and app version, request time) kept for security and troubleshooting, and aggregate counters such as “number of surahs opened today”. Those counters are totals only and are not linked to any individual.
  • On-device storage — the website and app store settings, your reading position, and downloaded recitation on your own device. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels.

We do not collect audio recordings, contacts, photos, files, or payment card details, and we do not use advertising identifiers.

How we use your information

  • To provide the app: prayer times, qibla, Quran, duas, stories.
  • To sync your progress across your devices and let you continue where you left off.
  • To send the notifications you have enabled — adhan, prayer reminders, and gentle nudges — at times that make sense in your time zone.
  • To answer your questions in the companion chat and remember useful context between conversations.
  • To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, fix problems, and understand overall usage through aggregate counts.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data for advertising or profiling. We do not use your content to train third-party AI models.

Device permissions

  • Location — to compute prayer times and qibla direction for where you are. Optional: you can decline and set your city manually.
  • Notifications — to deliver the adhan and reminders you turn on. Optional, and every notification type can be switched off individually.
  • Motion and compass sensors — to point the qibla arrow. Sensor readings stay on your device.

You can change or revoke any of these at any time in your device settings.

How we share information

We share personal information only with the service providers needed to run Noor, and only to the extent required:

  • Hosting and database providers — store the data described above on our behalf.
  • Expo and Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) / Apple Push Notification service — deliver push notifications to your device.
  • Anthropic and Google — process the messages you send to the companion so it can reply. Only the conversation content needed for the reply is sent; it is not used to train their models.
  • Email and messaging providers — send sign-in links and one-time codes.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service. If Noor is ever transferred to another owner, we will tell you before your information becomes subject to a different policy.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and worship data for as long as your account exists, so your history and streaks remain intact. Server logs are kept for a short period for security and debugging. When you delete your account, your personal data is removed from our production systems promptly and from routine backups within 30 days. Aggregate, non-identifying counts may remain.

Your choices and rights

  • Use Noor without an account for reading and prayer times.
  • Turn any notification on or off, and revoke location access at any time.
  • Access, correct, export, or delete your data — email us and we will help.
  • Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, UK, or California), you may have additional rights to object to or restrict processing, or to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We honour these requests regardless of where you live.

We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Deleting your account and data

In the app, sign in and go to Growth → Settings → Delete account. This permanently removes your account and associated data from our servers.

You can also email [email protected] from the address on your account and we will delete it for you, normally within 7 days.

Security

Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit with HTTPS. Passwords, when set, are stored only as salted hashes. Access to production data is limited to those who need it to operate the service. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you of a breach affecting your data as required by law.

Children

Noor is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

International transfers

Noor is used around the world, and our providers may process data in countries other than yours. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses for these transfers.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes we will give notice in the app before they take effect.
