  • ✦ After the adhan

    اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلاَةِ الْقَائِمَةِ، آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ

    Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da'watit-tammah, was-salatil-qa'imah, ati Muhammadanil-wasilata wal-fadilah, wab'ath-hu maqamam mahmudanil-ladhi wa'adtah

    O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer: grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.

  • ✦ When anger rises

    أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

    A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim

    I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. (The Prophet ﷺ said: if he says this, what he feels will leave him.)

  • ✦ Dua for anxiety and grief

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ... أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ... أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي

    Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika... an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi

    O Allah, I am Your servant... I ask You by every name that is Yours to make the Quran the spring of my heart and the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness and the reliever of my anxiety.

  • ✦ Dua of Musa عليه السلام in need

    رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

    Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir

    My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You send down to me, in need.

    Quran 28:24

  • ✦ Refuge from worry and grief

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

    Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

  • ✦ The dua of Yunus عليه السلام

    لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

    La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin

    There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

    Quran 21:87 — "No Muslim ever calls upon Allah with it for anything except that He answers him" (Tirmidhi 3505)

  • ✦ For someone wearing something new

    تُبْلِي وَيُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى

    Tubli wa yukhliful-lahu ta'ala

    May you wear it out, and may Allah the Exalted replace it (with another).

    Sunan Abi Dawud 4020 (sahih)

  • ✦ When wearing a new garment

    اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِيهِ، أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ

    Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtanih, as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lah

    O Allah, all praise is Yours — You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 4020 (sahih)

  • ✦ Freedom from debt

    اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

    Allahumma-kfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak

    O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so I need no one but You.

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3563 (hasan)

  • ✦ For spouse and children

    رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

    Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama

    Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous.

    Quran 25:74

  • ✦ At iftar

    ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

    Dhahabaz-zama'u wabtallatil-'uruqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha' Allah

    The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 2357 (hasan)

  • ✦ After eating

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

    Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

    Praise is to Allah who has fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3458 (hasan)

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

    Bismillah

    In the name of Allah. (If you forget: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu.)

  • ✦ Sayyid al-Istighfar (the master of seeking forgiveness)

    اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ...

    Allahumma anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduk...

    O Allah, You are my Lord; none has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as best I can...

    Sahih al-Bukhari 6306

  • ✦ Expiation of the gathering

    سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

    Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

    Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. (Said at the end of a gathering, it expiates what happened in it.)

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3433 (sahih)

  • ✦ Dua to be helped in remembering Allah

    اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

    Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik

    O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 1522 (sahih) — the Prophet ﷺ told Mu‘adh: "By Allah, I love you; never leave this after every prayer."

  • ✦ Seeing something you love

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي بِنِعْمَتِهِ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ

    Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi bini'matihi tatimmus-salihat

    Praise is to Allah by whose favor good things are completed.

    Sunan Ibn Majah 3803 (sahih)

  • ✦ At a loss or affliction

    إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

    Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha

    Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me better in its place. (Umm Salamah said it — and was given the Prophet ﷺ.)

  • ✦ For the deceased (from the janazah prayer)

    اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ

    Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalah

    O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him; grant him wellbeing and pardon him; honor his arrival and widen his entrance (to the grave).

    Sahih Muslim 963

  • ✦ Dua for guidance and steadfastness

    يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ

    Ya Muqallibal-qulub, thabbit qalbi 'ala dinik

    O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3522 (sahih)

  • ✦ Istikhara — seeking Allah's choice

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ...

    Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika...

    O Allah, I seek Your choice by Your knowledge, and Your power by Your might... (the full istikhara dua, prayed after two rak'ahs when facing a decision)

    Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

  • ✦ The most comprehensive dua

    رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

    Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar

    Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

    Quran 2:201; Sahih al-Bukhari 6389

  • ✦ Entering the home

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

    Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna

    In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 5096

  • ✦ Leaving the home

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

    Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

    In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3426 (hasan sahih)

  • ✦ For pain in the body

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ (ثلاثاً) — أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ (سبع مرات)

    Bismillah (3×) — A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir (7×)

    Place your hand on the place of pain: "In the name of Allah" three times, then seven times: "I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and fear."

    Sahih Muslim 2202

  • ✦ When visiting the sick

    لاَ بَأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

    La ba'sa, tahurun in sha' Allah

    No harm — (this illness is) a purification, if Allah wills.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 3616

  • ✦ Dua for beneficial knowledge

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

    Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbala

    O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds.

    Sunan Ibn Majah 925 (sahih)

  • ✦ Entering the marketplace

    لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لاَ يَمُوتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

    La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa hayyun la yamut, biyadihil-khayr, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir

    None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and death; He is Ever-Living and does not die; in His hand is all good, and He is able to do all things. (A million good deeds are recorded for it.)

    Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3429 (hasan)

  • ✦ Entering the mosque

    اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

    Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik

    O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

    Sahih Muslim 713

  • ✦ Dua for parents

    رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

    Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

    My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.

    Quran 17:24

  • ✦ For children and family

    أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

    U'idhukuma bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah

    I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious evil eye. (The Prophet ﷺ used it for Hasan and Husayn.)

  • ✦ Morning and evening protection

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ

    Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'

    In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm... (three times, morning and evening)

  • ✦ When it rains

    اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

    Allahumma sayyiban nafi'a

    O Allah, (make it) a beneficial rain.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 1032

  • ✦ Entering the restroom

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

    Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female devils.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 142

  • ✦ Leaving the restroom

    (I ask for) Your forgiveness.

  • ✦ Opening supplication (istiftah)

    سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

    Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk

    Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise; blessed is Your name and exalted is Your majesty; there is no god but You.

    Sunan Abi Dawud 775 (sahih)

  • ✦ Refuge from four, before salam

    اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

    Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannam, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the False Messiah.

  • ✦ Before sleeping

    بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

    Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya

    In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 6324

  • ✦ Waking during the night

    لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

    La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir

    None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things. (Whoever says this on waking at night, then asks — is answered.)

  • ✦ The exchange of the sneeze

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ — يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ — يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

    Alhamdulillah — Yarhamukallah — Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum

    The sneezer says: All praise is for Allah. His brother replies: May Allah have mercy on you. The sneezer answers: May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 6224

  • ✦ Dua for travel

    سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

    Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun

    Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it by our own efforts. Surely, to our Lord we are returning.

    Quran 43:13-14; Sahih Muslim 1342

  • ✦ Upon waking

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

    Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur

    All praise is for Allah who gave us life after taking it, and to Him is the resurrection.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 6312

  • ✦ After completing wudu

    أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

    Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh

    I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. (The eight gates of Paradise are opened for the one who says it.)
