The Smoke — ad-Dukhan, from verse 10, a visible smoke described as a sign of a coming affliction.
✦ When it came
Meccan. Some early scholars connected the smoke to a famine that struck Makkah so severely that people saw a haze from hunger; others read it as a sign still to come.
✦ The story
A short, dense surah that opens with the blessed night on which the Quran was sent down, *in which every wise matter is made distinct.*
Then Pharaoh again, and a line about his fall that has stayed in the language: *"And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved."* An empire ends and the sky does not notice.
And it closes with the question the whole surah was built to ask: *"Did you think that We created you in vain, and that you would not be returned to Us?"* — the same question as Al-Mu'minun, asked again with the smoke on the horizon.
