Those Ranged in Ranks — the angels standing in rows, sworn by in the opening verse.

Meccan. It answers claims the Makkans made about angels being daughters of Allah, and about jinn being partners with Him.
✦ The story
The surah's centre is a father and a son. Ibrahim عليه السلام, given a forbearing boy after a long wait, sees in a dream that he must sacrifice him. He does not simply act — he tells him. *"O my son, I see in a dream that I must sacrifice you; so see what you think."*
And the boy answers: *"O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient."*
They both submit. The knife is stopped. A great sacrifice is given in his place, and the moment is remembered by pilgrims every year. The Quran calls it plainly *"the clear trial"*, and does not pretend it was easy.
Around it, the surah runs through Nuh, Musa, Harun, Ilyas, Lut, and Yunus — swallowed, then cast onto open shore, ill, with a gourd plant grown over him. Care in the aftermath, described in detail.
