The Three Men and the Rock

Trapped in a cave by a fallen boulder, three men called on Allah by the most sincere deed each had ever done — and the rock moved.

The Prophet ﷺ told us of three men from the nations before us who were traveling when rain drove them into a cave. A boulder slid down the mountain and sealed the entrance completely. No strength could move it. One of them said: Nothing will save you except calling upon Allah by the most sincere deeds you have ever done.

The first said: "O Allah, I had elderly parents, and I never let my family drink the evening milk before them. One day I traveled far for pasture and returned to find them asleep. I stood by their heads with the cup in my hand until dawn — my children crying with hunger at my feet — because I would not wake my parents and would not serve anyone before them. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, relieve us." The rock shifted — but not enough to escape.

The second said: "O Allah, I loved my cousin as intensely as a man can love a woman, and she refused me. Then a year of famine drove her to me, and I gave her a hundred and twenty dinars on the condition she would be mine. When I was about to take her, she said: Fear Allah, and do not break the seal except by its right. So I stood up and left her — and left her the gold. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, relieve us." The rock moved further — but still not enough.

The third said: "O Allah, I hired workers and paid them all except one man who left without his wage. I invested his wage until it grew into cattle, sheep, and camels. Years later he returned, and I said: All of this is yours. He said, 'Do not mock me.' I said: I do not mock you — and he drove it all away, leaving nothing. O Allah, if I did that seeking Your Face, relieve us."

And the rock rolled away, and they walked out.

Three private deeds — honoring parents, leaving sin at its very edge, guarding another man's right beyond all obligation — hidden from every eye except the One whose sight matters. That is ikhlas: the deed you would still do if no one on earth could ever know.
