Al-Bayyinah

✦ Why this name

The Clear Evidence — al-Bayyinah, the proof that came to people who were waiting for it.

✦ When it came

Madinan by most reports. The Prophet ﷺ told Ubayy ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه that Allah had commanded him to recite this surah to him. Ubayy asked, "Did Allah mention me by name?" — and wept.

✦ The story

The surah makes a sharp observation: people were not going to change until the evidence came — and when it came, they split, and the ones who split first were the ones who had the scriptures.

Then it states the religion in a single verse, and it is short: *"And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and give zakah. And that is the correct religion."*

Sincerity, prayer, zakah. That is the list.

And it ends with a line about the reward that is easy to read past: *"Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him."* The pleasure runs both ways.

✦ How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-4

    Until the evidence came

Purified pages recited, and division arriving only after the proof did.

  2. AYAH 5

    The correct religion

Sincere worship, prayer, zakah — stated as the whole command.

  3. AYAH 6-8

    The best of creatures

And Allah pleased with them, and they with Him.
