✦ Why this name
The Fig — at-Tin, sworn by in the opening verse alongside the olive.
✦ When it came
Meccan, early. The Prophet ﷺ recited it in the 'Isha prayer, and one companion said he never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice or recitation.
✦ The story
By the fig and the olive, by Mount Sinai, and by this secure city — four oaths, and then the statement they were building toward:
*"We have certainly created man in the best of moulds."*
And then the fall: *"Then We returned him to the lowest of the low"* — except those who believe and do righteous deeds, who have a reward uninterrupted.
The design is excellent. What is done with it is the variable.
And it ends with a question that answers itself: *"Is not Allah the most just of judges?"*
