The Morning Brightness — ad-Duha, the light of mid-morning, sworn by in the first verse.
✦ When it came
Meccan. Revelation had paused for a period, and people were saying the Prophet's ﷺ Lord had abandoned him. He was distressed. This came.
✦ The story
*"By the morning brightness, and by the night when it covers with darkness — your Lord has not taken leave of you, nor has He detested you."*
Note the order. The morning *and* the night. Both sworn by. The dark stretch was not a sign of abandonment; it was part of the day.
Then: *"And the Hereafter is better for you than the first life. And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied."*
And then Allah reminds him of his own life as evidence: *Did He not find you an orphan and give refuge? And find you lost and guide? And find you poor and make you self-sufficient?* Three questions, three answers already in the past.
The surah ends by turning the whole thing outward: *so as for the orphan, do not oppress him. And as for the one who asks, do not repel him.* You were an orphan; be gentle with orphans. You had nothing; do not turn away the one who asks.
