✦ Why this name
The City — al-Balad, Makkah, sworn by in the opening verse.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ is addressed as a free resident of a city that was about to make him an outcast.
✦ The story
Allah swears by Makkah — *and you are free of restriction in this city* — and by a parent and what they bore. And then: *"We have certainly created man into hardship."* Life is difficult by design.
The surah then names a climb that most people never attempt: *"But he has not broken through the difficult pass. And what can make you know what the difficult pass is?"*
The answer is unexpectedly concrete. It is not a spiritual state. It is: *freeing a slave, or feeding on a day of severe hunger an orphan of near relationship, or a needy person in misery.* And then being among those who believe and *advise one another to patience and to compassion.*
The steep road is other people.
