✦ Why this name
The Repentance — from the repentance accepted in verses 117–118, including the three who were left behind and then forgiven.
✦ When it came
The last long surah revealed, around the expedition to Tabuk in the ninth year. It is the only surah that does not begin with the basmalah — the early community discussed why, and no report settles it decisively.
✦ The story
This is the surah of the final sorting. After twenty years, the community is large, comfortable, and secure — and comfort exposes people that danger never did.
It opens with treaties: those honoured, and those dissolved because the other side broke them first. Then it turns inward, and most of the surah is about the people who found reasons not to come to Tabuk. The excuses are quoted. The whispering is quoted. Even the mosque built as a base for undermining the community is named and ordered demolished.
But the surah's heart is a cave. *"Do not grieve; Allah is with us."* The Prophet ﷺ to Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, hidden while the search parties passed. And its most human passage is the three who stayed behind out of nothing but weakness, told the truth about it, and were shunned for fifty days *until the earth closed in on them despite its vastness* — and then forgiven. The surah ends by describing the Prophet ﷺ as grieved by what burdens you, concerned for you, gentle and merciful.
