✦ Why this name
The Dawn — al-Fajr, sworn by in the first verse.
✦ When it came
Meccan. It closes with four verses recited at Muslim funerals across the world.
✦ The story
The surah swears by the dawn, by ten nights, by the even and the odd, and by the night as it passes — and then asks: *"Is there in that an oath for one of perception?"* If you can hear it, you already know.
Then three civilisations: 'Ad of the lofty pillars, Thamud who carved the rocks in the valley, and Pharaoh of the stakes. All gone.
Then the surah turns to something much smaller and much closer. When Allah tests a person with generosity, he says *my Lord has honoured me.* When He restricts his provision, he says *my Lord has humiliated me.* Both readings are wrong. And then the real charge, which is not about wealth at all: *"No! But you do not honour the orphan, and you do not encourage one another to feed the poor."*
And then, at the end, the most beautiful invitation in the Quran: *"O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing to Him. So enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise."*
