✦ Why this name
The Overwhelming — al-Ghashiyah, a name for the Day of Judgement: the event that covers everything.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite it with al-A'la in the Friday and Eid prayers.
✦ The story
Two faces, described in turn. Humbled, labouring, exhausted — working hard for nothing. And others content with their effort, in a garden where *they will hear no unsuitable speech*, with a flowing spring, raised couches, cups set at hand, cushions lined up and carpets spread out.
Then the surah turns and asks you to look at four ordinary things:
*"Do they not look at the camels — how they are created? And at the sky — how it is raised? And at the mountains — how they are erected? And at the earth — how it is spread out?"*
A camel, the sky, a mountain, the ground. Nothing rare. And then the instruction that follows: *"So remind — you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller."*
