✦ Why this name
The Most High — al-A'la, from the opening command to glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High.
✦ When it came
Meccan, early. The Prophet ﷺ recited it regularly in Witr, in Eid prayers, and in Friday prayers.
✦ The story
*"Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High — who created and proportioned, and who destined and then guided."* Four verbs, and the whole relationship.
Then a promise made directly to the Prophet ﷺ: *"We will make you recite, and you will not forget."*
The surah's method is gentle and it says so: *"So remind, if the reminder should benefit."* And it ends with a comparison that puts an entire life in scale: *"But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more lasting."*
Its last two verses note that this is not new — it is in the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa. The message is old; only the audience is new.
