✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
البروج
Al-Buruj
✦ Why this name
The Great Stars — al-Buruj, the constellations sworn by in the opening verse.
✦ When it came
Meccan, during the years of torture. It tells the story of believers before Islam who were burned alive in a trench for their faith.
✦ The story
Believers were brought to a trench of fire and given a choice: renounce, or burn. They chose the fire. And their persecutors *sat by it, witnessing what they were doing to the believers.* Watching. As entertainment.
The Quran's verdict is one line: *"And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy."* That was the entire crime.
To a community in Makkah being beaten in the streets, this said: it has been worse, and it was still true.
And the surah closes by locating the Quran itself beyond anyone's reach: *"But this is an honoured Quran, in a preserved tablet."* Whatever they do to you, they cannot touch this.
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 1-10
The people of the ditch
The trench, the fire, the spectators — and the single reason for their hatred.
- AYAH 11-16
The seizing of your Lord
The Originator, the Loving, the Owner of the Throne — who does whatever He intends.
