✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الإنشقاق
Al-Inshiqaq
✦ Why this name
The Splitting Open — al-Inshiqaq, the sky splitting and listening to its Lord.
✦ When it came
Meccan. A surah about effort, and where all of it is heading.
✦ The story
The sky splits and *listens to its Lord, as it must.* The earth is stretched out, throws out what is inside it, and empties — *and it listens to its Lord, as it must.* Even the cosmos is described as obedient.
Then the verse the surah exists for: *"O mankind, indeed you are labouring toward your Lord with exertion, and you will meet Him."*
Everyone is working. Everyone is tired. The question is only what you are walking toward.
And then the two records again, one in the right hand and one behind the back — and an oath by the twilight glow, by the night and what it envelops, and by the moon when it becomes full: *"You will surely embark upon stage after stage."*
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 6-15
Labouring toward your Lord
The exertion of every life, and the two ways the record is received.
- AYAH 16-25
Stage after stage
The oath by twilight, night, and the full moon — and a life that moves in phases.
