المطففين

The surah opens with a threat over what looks like a small thing: *"Woe to those who give less than due — who, when they take a measure from people, take in full, but when they give by measure or weight, they cause loss."*

Not theft. Not violence. Rounding in your own favour. And the Quran calls it *woe*, then asks: *"Do they not think that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day?"*

The rest of the surah is about a rust that builds up: *"No — rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning."* Sins as residue on a surface, dulling it until nothing reflects.

And it ends by reversing a scene the believers knew well: in Makkah the wealthy used to laugh at the poor Muslims and wink at each other as they passed. On that Day, *the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers, on adorned couches, observing.*
