✦ Why this name
The Wrapping — at-Takwir, from the sun being wound up like a turban in the first verse.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever wishes to look at the Day of Judgement as though seeing it with his own eyes should read this surah.
✦ The story
Twelve things happen, each in a single line: the sun wrapped up, the stars fallen, the mountains moved, the pregnant camels abandoned, the wild beasts gathered, the seas set on fire, the souls paired, the scrolls spread — and then, in the middle of the cosmos coming apart, one small question that stops the whole thing:
*"And when the girl buried alive is asked: for what sin was she killed?"*
The universe ends, and Allah pauses to ask about one murdered child. Not the murderer — the child is asked, in front of everyone. There is no more devastating verse about the value of a life in any scripture.
The rest of the surah defends the messenger and the message, and ends with a sentence that removes every excuse: *"And you do not will except that Allah wills — the Lord of the worlds."*
