He Frowned — 'Abasa, the opening word, describing the Prophet ﷺ himself.
✦ When it came
Meccan. A blind man, 'Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum رضي الله عنه, interrupted the Prophet ﷺ while he was speaking to the leaders of Quraysh, hoping they would accept Islam. The Prophet ﷺ frowned and turned away. This surah came down about it.
✦ The story
There is no surah quite like this one. Allah corrects His own Messenger ﷺ, in words that were then recited by everyone forever: *"He frowned and turned away, because the blind man came to him."*
The correction is not about rudeness. It is about priorities. The wealthy man who feels no need — *to him you give attention.* And the one who came striving, in fear of Allah — *from him you are distracted.*
The Prophet ﷺ afterwards used to greet Ibn Umm Maktum with: *"Welcome to the one on whose account my Lord rebuked me."* And he twice left him in charge of Madinah.
The rest of the surah looks at where a human being came from — a drop, a path made easy, a grave — and at the food on the table: grain, grapes, olives, palms, gardens, and pasture. *Let mankind look at his food.*
