The Spoils of War — the surah was revealed when the Muslims argued after Badr about how the captured goods should be divided.
✦ When it came
Madinan, revealed around the battle of Badr in the second year after hijrah — a small, badly equipped group against an army three times its size. The Quran narrates the battle from the inside while it is still fresh.
✦ The story
The surah opens with a question about spoils and refuses to answer it directly. *"The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger — so fear Allah and set right the matter between you."* Before the property is settled, the hearts are.
Then it retells Badr, and every retelling belongs to Allah rather than to the fighters. *"You did not kill them, but Allah killed them. And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw."* Sleep is described falling over the army as a gift. Rain firms the sand under their feet. Angels are sent. The believers' own count of the enemy is made to look small in their eyes so they would not lose nerve.
And then the conditions are named, because a victory explains nothing on its own: obey Allah and His Messenger, do not dispute among yourselves or your strength will leave, be patient. The surah closes on prisoners of war treated with a mercy the age did not expect, and on the bond between those who migrated and those who took them in.
