✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
المزمل
Al-Muzzammil
✦ Why this name
The Enwrapped One — al-Muzzammil, addressing the Prophet ﷺ as he lay wrapped in a cloak after an overwhelming experience.
✦ When it came
Meccan, very early. He had come home shaken and asked to be covered. The revelation that came called him by that state — and then gave him work to do.
✦ The story
*"O you who wraps himself in clothing, stand at night, except for a little."* The first instruction of the mission was not to preach. It was to pray at night.
The reason is given, and it is practical: *"Indeed, the night rising is stronger in impression and more suitable for words."* And then, gently: *"Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation."* You have a long day ahead; the night is where you get what you need for it.
The Prophet ﷺ and his companions stood so long that their feet swelled. So the surah's final verse — revealed much later, and the longest verse in the surah by far — lifted the obligation: *"Recite what is easy from it."* Allah knows some of you are ill, some travelling, some working. Do what you can.
The whole surah is the pattern for building anything difficult: quiet strength first, then load, then mercy when the load is too much.
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 10-19
Be patient with what they say
A beautiful separation from those who deny, and a warning stated briefly.
