✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الجن
Al-Jinn
✦ Why this name
The Jinn — al-Jinn, who heard the Quran being recited and reported back to their own people.
✦ When it came
Meccan, after the journey to Ta'if. A group of jinn heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting at night, and he was informed of it by revelation — he had not seen them.
✦ The story
Almost the whole surah is a quotation. A group of jinn hear the Quran and say to their people: *"Indeed, we have heard an amazing recitation. It guides to the right course, so we have believed in it."*
What they report is a full theology, arrived at from a single hearing: that Allah has taken neither wife nor son, that some of them are righteous and some are not, that they used to sit in places in the sky to listen and now find them guarded, and that they can never escape Allah on earth or by fleeing.
And their conclusion is a piece of reasoning worth keeping: *"And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden."* No loss and no injustice — that was enough for them.
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 1-15
An amazing recitation
The jinn's own report — what they heard, what they concluded, and their divisions.
