✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
نوح
Nuh
✦ Why this name
Noah — the whole surah is his story and, mostly, his own words.
✦ When it came
Meccan. A surah about the longest recorded effort of any prophet, given to a man being told his own effort was pointless.
✦ The story
Nuh عليه السلام reports back to Allah, and the report is exhausting to read. *"I invited my people night and day, but my invitation increased them only in flight."* He called them in public, then in private, then both. He tried every approach.
And the argument he used is worth noticing, because it is not a threat. He told them: *"Ask forgiveness of your Lord. He will send rain in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and make for you gardens and rivers."* Istighfar offered as the route to a good life, not just a clean record.
Nine hundred and fifty years, and almost no one came. The surah ends with his du'a for his household and for every believing man and woman — including those not yet born.
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 10-20
Ask forgiveness
Rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers — offered as the fruit of istighfar.
- AYAH 21-28
The du'a at the end
For his parents, for whoever enters his house believing, and for all believing men and women.
