✦ Why this name

The Ways of Ascent — al-Ma'arij, from verse 3, describing Allah as the Lord of the ascending stairways.

✦ When it came

Meccan. It opens with someone demanding the punishment be brought on immediately — a real challenge, answered.

✦ The story

The surah gives the most accurate description of human nature in the Quran, and it is not flattering: *"Indeed, mankind was created anxious — when evil touches him, impatient; and when good touches him, withholding."*

Anxious by default. Panicking in difficulty, tight-fisted in ease.

And then the exception, introduced with one word: *"except those who pray."* What follows is the list of what actually changes a person — constancy in prayer, a known right in their wealth for the one who asks and the one deprived, belief in the Day, fear of their Lord, guarding their chastity, keeping trusts and testimony, and standing by their prayers.

The cure for anxiety, according to this surah, is a structured life of worship and giving.

✦ How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-18

A day of fifty thousand years

The demand for punishment, and a Day whose length is stated.

  2. AYAH 19-21

    Created anxious

Impatient in hardship, withholding in ease — the human default.

  3. AYAH 22-35

    Except those who pray

Nine qualities that break the pattern, beginning and ending with prayer.
