The Heights — the elevated place in verses 46–49 where some people stand between Paradise and the Fire, able to see both.
✦ When it came
Meccan, late in the period. It is the longest of the Meccan surahs and reads as a survey of history: every messenger who came, and what happened to the people who turned him away.
✦ The story
The surah begins where humanity began. Adam is created, the angels bow, Iblis refuses out of pride, and then asks for time — *"I will sit in wait for them on Your straight path."* The Quran shows you the enemy's opening move before it shows you anything else.
Then comes the procession: Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut, Shu'ayb — one after another, each with the same shape. A man says *worship Allah, you have no god besides Him.* The leaders call him a fool. A few believe. The rest are taken. The repetition is the argument.
The longest telling is Musa عليه السلام against Pharaoh: the staff, the magicians who prostrate the moment they see the truth and accept execution rather than take it back, the sea, and then — most painfully — the calf, built by the very people who had just been rescued. The surah ends by taking a covenant from all of humanity before birth, *"Am I not your Lord?"*, and closing with a command that has become a whole ethic: *take to forgiveness, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.*
