✦ Why this name
The Pen — al-Qalam, sworn by in the opening verse. Among the earliest revelations.
✦ When it came
Meccan, very early — some place it second after al-'Alaq. The Prophet ﷺ was being called mad; this surah answers that directly.
✦ The story
It swears by the pen and by what is written, and then delivers the verse that is the Prophet's ﷺ character reference for all time: *"And indeed, you are of a great moral character."*
Then it lists the qualities of the man attacking him — habitual swearer, scorner, slanderer, walking about with malicious gossip, preventer of good, aggressive, cruel — a portrait drawn without naming anyone.
And in the middle is the parable of the garden owners who agreed at night to harvest before dawn *so the poor would not know*, and deliberately said no "if Allah wills". They arrived to find it stripped bare. They blamed each other, and the most moderate among them said what they should have said the night before: *"Did I not tell you, why do you not glorify Allah?"*
