✦ Why this name
The Sovereignty — al-Mulk, from the opening verse: "Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion."
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ said there is a surah of thirty verses that intercedes for a person until he is forgiven, and that he would love it to be in the heart of every believer.
✦ The story
The surah asks why you are here and answers it in the second verse: *"He created death and life to test which of you is best in deed."* Not most in deed. Best.
Then it sends you looking for a flaw. *Look again — and again — does your vision perceive any breaks?* Return your gaze twice, and it comes back to you exhausted, having found nothing.
And its most practical verse is an instruction to get moving: *"It is He who made the earth tame for you — so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision."* The earth made manageable, and you told to walk on it.
It ends with a question there is no answer to: *"Say: if your water was to become sunken in the earth, then who could bring you flowing water?"*
