✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الطلاق
At-Talaq
✦ Why this name
The Divorce — at-Talaq, which sets out the procedure in detail. It is also called "the short Surat an-Nisa".
✦ When it came
Madinan. It legislates the waiting period, housing, maintenance, and the requirement of witnesses — protections at the point where a family is breaking.
✦ The story
A surah of law that keeps interrupting itself with mercy. Count the waiting period precisely. Do not expel her from her house. Do not make her leave unless she commits a clear immorality. House her where you live, according to your means, and do not harm her to make things difficult. If she is pregnant, spend on her until she delivers. If she nurses your child, pay her.
And then, in the middle of the most painful process a family goes through, come the two verses people recite when they have run out of options anywhere in life:
*"And whoever fears Allah — He will make for him a way out, and will provide for him from where he does not expect."*
The law is for the breaking of a marriage. The promise is for anyone with nowhere left to turn.
