✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الجمعة
Al-Jumu'ah
✦ Why this name
The Friday — al-Jumu'ah, from verse 9, which commands hastening to the remembrance of Allah when the call is made on that day.
✦ When it came
Madinan. A trade caravan arrived during the Friday sermon and most of the congregation left to meet it — the surah's last verse addresses exactly that.
✦ The story
The surah opens by describing what the Prophet ﷺ was sent to do: recite the verses, purify them, and teach them the Book and wisdom — *although they were before in clear error.* Education as the mission.
Then a comparison that has stayed sharp for fourteen centuries: those given the Torah who did not carry it are *like a donkey carrying volumes of books.* The weight without the benefit.
And then Friday: leave your trade, come to the remembrance, and afterwards *disperse in the land and seek the bounty of Allah.* Not withdrawal — a pause, then back to work. The final verse names the day the caravan drums pulled the congregation out of the mosque, and answers: *"What is with Allah is better than amusement and than trade."*
✦ How it unfolds
