✦ Why this name
The Ranks — as-Saff, from verse 4, describing those who fight in Allah's cause in a row as though they were a solid structure.
✦ When it came
Madinan. Some had said they wished they knew which deeds Allah loved most, and then fell short when told. The surah addresses the gap between saying and doing.
✦ The story
Two verses of this surah are among the most quoted in any khutbah about sincerity: *"O you who believe, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do."*
Then the image the surah is named for: Allah loves those who stand in His cause *in a row, as though they were a single structure joined firmly together*. Not brave individuals — a wall.
It also records 'Isa عليه السلام announcing a messenger to come after him by name, and it closes by asking a question and then answering it: shall I show you a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?
