The Cattle — from the superstitions in verses 136–145, where livestock were declared forbidden or permitted by human invention and attributed to Allah.
✦ When it came
Meccan, and by several reports revealed all at once near the end of the Meccan period, accompanied by a great many angels. It comes after years of rejection — the surah of a believer who has argued long and now states the case from the ground up.
✦ The story
This is the Quran's sustained argument for tawhid, and it is built almost entirely out of questions.
Its centre is Ibrahim عليه السلام as a young man looking at the night sky. A star rises and he says *this is my Lord* — then it sets, and he answers himself: *I do not love things that set.* Then the moon. Then the sun, bigger than both. Each one sets. And he turns his face to the One who made all of them. It is the Quran teaching a method, not just telling a story: follow the reasoning until only One is left standing.
Around that centre the surah dismantles the alternatives. Idols that were named without knowledge. Food rules invented and then blamed on God. Children buried out of fear of poverty. Ancestors followed simply because they were ancestors. And running underneath it all, an unusual tenderness — *"your Lord has written mercy upon Himself"* — as if the argument is being made by someone who badly wants it to land.
