The Iron — al-Hadid, from verse 25, where iron is described as sent down, containing great might and benefits for people.
✦ When it came
Madinan. Its central verse was revealed as a gentle rebuke to believers whose hearts had begun to settle into routine.
✦ The story
The surah opens with everything in the heavens and earth glorifying Allah, and includes the verse that has comforted more people than almost any other: *"And He is with you wherever you are."*
Then comes the question that shook the early community, and still does: *"Has the time not come for those who believe that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah?"* Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه said only four years passed between their accepting Islam and Allah asking them this.
And then the clearest description of worldly life in the Quran: play, amusement, adornment, boasting among yourselves, competing in wealth and children — like rain whose resulting growth pleases the farmers, then dries, then turns yellow, then becomes debris.
