The Moon — al-Qamar, from the opening verse: "The Hour has come near, and the moon has split."
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Quraysh had demanded a sign, and the moon was split as they watched. The surah opens by noting that they called it magic and carried on.
✦ The story
The most rhythmic surah in the Quran. Four peoples — Nuh's, 'Ad, Thamud, Lut's, and then Pharaoh's — each destroyed, and after each account the same two lines return like a bell:
*"And how severe were My punishment and My warnings."* *"And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?"*
Four times. The Quran, in a surah about destruction, keeps interrupting itself to say: this Book is easy, take it. The repetition is not decoration — it is an offer being repeated to people who keep not taking it.
