An-Najm
✦ Why this name
The Star — an-Najm, sworn by in the first verse. It was the first surah recited publicly aloud in Makkah.
✦ When it came
Meccan. When the Prophet ﷺ recited it at the Ka'bah and reached the closing prostration, everyone present prostrated — believers and disbelievers together.
✦ The story
The surah defends the source of the revelation: *"He does not speak from his own desire; it is nothing but revelation revealed."* And then describes the meeting at the lote tree of the utmost boundary — the vision at the horizon, described in language that stays deliberately restrained: *"the heart did not lie about what it saw."*
The second half is a series of principles stated so cleanly they read like law. No bearer of burdens carries another's. A person gets only what they strive for. Their effort will be seen. Then they will be repaid in full.
And a warning about the habit of grading other people: *"So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He knows best who fears Him."*
