✦ Why this name

The Mount — at-Tur, Mount Sinai, sworn by in the first verse.

✦ When it came

Meccan. Jubayr ibn Mut'im رضي الله عنه came to Makkah while still a disbeliever, heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting this surah in Maghrib, and said his heart was about to fly — he later accepted Islam.

✦ The story

A surah of oaths and of consolation. It swears by the mountain, by a Book inscribed, by the frequented House, by the raised canopy of the sky, by the sea filled with fire.

Then it runs through every accusation thrown at the Prophet ﷺ — poet, madman, soothsayer, forger — and turns each into a question the accusers cannot answer. *Or were they created by nothing? Or are they the creators? Or do they own the treasuries of your Lord?*

And it ends with a line that must have carried him through a great deal: *"So be patient for the decision of your Lord — for indeed, you are in Our eyes."*

✦ How it unfolds

  1. AYAH 1-16

    The oaths

The mountain, the Book, the House, the sky, the sea — and a punishment with no repelling.

  2. AYAH 17-28

    Families reunited

The God-conscious in gardens, their offspring joined to them, remembering how they used to fear.

  3. AYAH 29-49

    The unanswerable questions

Every accusation turned back as a question — and "you are in Our eyes."
