✦ Why this name
Qaf — a single letter opening the surah, whose meaning is left with Allah.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite it in the Eid prayers and from the pulpit on Fridays, so often that one companion said she learned it only from hearing him deliver it.
✦ The story
The whole surah is about how close things actually are.
Allah is nearer to a person than their jugular vein. Two angels sit recording, one on the right and one on the left — *not a word does he utter but there is an observer ready.* The Day of Judgement is described as a call from a nearby place. Death arrives with the truth: *"this is what you were trying to avoid."*
And its final instruction to the Prophet ﷺ, after all the argument, is not to force anything: *"You are not over them a tyrant. So remind by the Quran those who fear My warning."*
Its most quoted line names exactly who this Book is for: *"a reminder for whoever has a heart, or listens while he is present in mind."*
