✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الحجرات
Al-Hujurat
✦ Why this name
The Chambers — al-Hujurat, the rooms of the Prophet's ﷺ household, outside which some visitors called out loudly.
✦ When it came
Madinan, year nine. Delegations were arriving from across Arabia, many with desert manners and no idea how to conduct themselves. This surah is the community's code of conduct — eighteen verses that could reform any workplace, family, or group chat.
✦ The story
It is short and it is relentless, and almost every verse is a rule about how to treat each other.
Verify news before you act on it — a whole conflict was nearly started over an unverified report. If two groups of believers fight, make peace between them. Do not mock people; the one mocked may be better than the mocker. Do not insult with nicknames. Avoid suspicion — some suspicion is sin. Do not spy. Do not backbite, and here the Quran uses an image nobody forgets: *would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it.*
Then it widens: *"O mankind, We created you from a male and a female, and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. The most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-conscious."* Difference is for recognition, not ranking.
And it closes by correcting bedouins who claimed they had believed: *say rather, we have submitted — for faith has not yet entered your hearts.*
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 1-5
Manners with the Prophet ﷺ
Not putting yourself ahead of Allah and His Messenger, and not raising your voice.
- AYAH 6-10
Verify, then reconcile
Check news before acting; make peace between believers who fight; "the believers are but brothers."
- AYAH 11-12
Six ways to wrong each other
Mockery, insults, nicknames, suspicion, spying, backbiting — each named and forbidden.
- AYAH 13
Peoples and tribes
Difference created so people may know one another, with taqwa as the only ranking.
✦ Verses to carry
- 13"We made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. The most noble of you is the most God-conscious."
- 12Suspicion, spying and backbiting forbidden — with the image of eating a dead brother's flesh.
- 6"If a corrupt person comes to you with information, verify it." The rule for every forwarded message.
- 11"Let not a people ridicule another people; perhaps they may be better than them."
✦ Where it sits
Eighteen verses that function as the Quran's social code — read alongside An-Nur, which deals with what happens when they are ignored.
