✦ Why this name

The Victory — al-Fath, revealed about the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which looked at the time like a defeat.

✦ When it came

Madinan, year six, on the road back from Hudaybiyyah. The Muslims had been turned back from 'Umrah and had signed terms many of them found humiliating. Then this came down calling it a clear victory.

✦ The story

The companions had set out for pilgrimage and were sent home without performing it. The treaty terms looked one-sided. 'Umar رضي الله عنه asked openly why they were accepting humiliation. And on the road back, the surah opened: *"Indeed, We have given you a clear victory."*

It was. Within two years of peace, more people entered Islam than in the nineteen years before it. The surah is the Quran's clearest lesson that you cannot judge an outcome from inside the moment.

It also records the pledge under the tree — *"Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you"* — and closes by describing the community itself: *severe against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves*, their mark on their faces from prostration, like a shoot that grows strong and stands on its own stem.
