Muhammad ﷺ — one of only a few surahs named after a person, from verse 2. Also called al-Qital, "the Fighting".
✦ When it came
Madinan, in the period when armed conflict had become unavoidable. It deals with war, and with what a person's conduct in it reveals about their heart.
✦ The story
A surah about the difference between saying and doing. It describes those who believed and did righteous deeds, and those who said the words and then, when a decisive passage was revealed, *looked at you with the look of one fainting from death.*
The exchange it offers is direct: *"If you support Allah, He will support you and plant your feet firmly."*
And its most enduring line is a question about the Quran itself, asked of people who had it and did not use it: *"Do they not then reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?"*
