✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الأحقاف
Al-Ahqaf
✦ Why this name
The Sand Dunes — al-Ahqaf, the dune country in southern Arabia where the people of 'Ad lived.
✦ When it came
Meccan, late — around the journey to Ta'if, when the Prophet ﷺ was rejected and stoned. The surah records a group of jinn who listened to the Quran and believed on the way back.
✦ The story
'Ad saw a cloud coming toward their valleys and said *"this is a cloud bringing us rain."* It was the wind that destroyed them. The surah uses it as a picture of misreading a warning as a gift.
But the surah's most-loved passage is domestic. A human being carried with difficulty and delivered with difficulty; thirty months of carrying and weaning; and then, at forty, a du'a that has become the du'a of every person entering middle age: *"My Lord, enable me to be grateful for the favour You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness that pleases You, and make righteous for me my offspring."*
And a group of jinn, hearing the Quran recited at night, going back to their people as callers.
