✦ AT A GLANCE ✦
الجاثية
Al-Jathiyah
✦ Why this name
The Kneeling — al-Jathiyah, from verse 28, where every nation is seen kneeling as its record is brought.
✦ When it came
Meccan. A short surah addressed to people who said there is nothing but this life and time.
✦ The story
The surah opens by listing signs — in your own creation, in the animals spread across the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in rain that revives dead land, in the shifting of the winds — and calls them, three times over, *signs for a people who reason*.
Then it names the position it is arguing against, quoting it exactly: *"There is nothing but our worldly life; we die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time."*
And it delivers the sharpest diagnosis in the Quran of what actually happens when a person refuses: *"Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god?"* Not an idol of stone. Wanting, made into a deity.
✦ How it unfolds
- AYAH 1-13
Signs for those who reason
Creation, animals, night and day, rain, the winds — the sea subjected so ships may run.
- AYAH 27-37
Every nation kneeling
Records brought, and a book that speaks the truth about what was done.
