✦ Why this name
The Ornaments of Gold — az-Zukhruf, from verse 35, where gold and silver are described as nothing more than the enjoyment of this brief life.
✦ When it came
Meccan. The Quraysh objected that if the Quran were true, it would have come to one of the two great men of Makkah and Ta'if. This surah answers that.
✦ The story
The objection is quoted directly: *"Why was this Quran not sent down to a great man from the two cities?"* And the answer is one of the most cutting in the Quran: *"Is it they who distribute the mercy of your Lord?"*
Then the surah says something that should be read carefully. If it were not that all people would become one single community of disbelievers, Allah would have given the deniers *silver roofs and staircases* to climb — because these things are of so little consequence. Wealth is not a scoreboard.
And near the end, a line about the next life that reframes friendship entirely: *"Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other — except the righteous."*
