✦ Why this name
The Forgiver — Ghafir, from verse 3. Also called al-Mu'min, "the Believer", after the man from Pharaoh's own family who spoke up.
✦ When it came
Meccan, the first of seven consecutive surahs opening with Ha-Mim. The Prophet ﷺ was facing hostility from within his own tribe — and the surah tells the story of a man who dissented from within his.
✦ The story
Inside Pharaoh's court, when Musa عليه السلام is about to be killed, a man from Pharaoh's own family who had hidden his faith stands up and says: *"Are you going to kill a man because he says, my Lord is Allah?"*
His speech is the longest single argument by an unnamed believer in the Quran. He appeals to their history, to their interest, to their reason. They do not listen. And as the trap closes on him he says: *"I entrust my affair to Allah"* — and Allah protected him from their plot.
The surah also carries the most direct invitation in the Book: *"And your Lord says: call upon Me; I will respond to you."* Not "ask and perhaps". Call, and I will answer.
