The Women — because so much of it protects the rights of women, orphans, and the vulnerable inside a family.
✦ When it came
Madinan, much of it after Uhud left many widows and orphans in a small city. Abstract justice was suddenly a practical emergency: who raises these children, who holds their property, who do these women marry.
✦ The story
The surah opens by reminding humanity that it came from a single soul — and then immediately says: *fear Allah, and fear the wombs that bore you.* Everything after that is the working out of that one sentence.
Orphans' property is not to be swallowed. Inheritance is fixed by revelation rather than left to whoever is strongest in the room. Marriage is a contract with a dower that belongs to the wife. Women are not property to be inherited. When a marriage is breaking, two arbiters are appointed — one from each family — before anything is decided.
Then the frame widens: justice as testimony, *"even against yourselves or your parents or your relatives."* Hypocrites who sit on the fence. People who migrated and people who stayed. The surah is unusually blunt about religion as performance — and unusually generous about repentance, returning again and again to the same promise: Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
