Meccan, early. It opens with the leaders of Quraysh walking out of a meeting saying "persist in your gods" — an actual scene, quoted.
✦ The story
A surah about people in power and how they hold it.
Dawud عليه السلام is startled in his private chamber by two men who climb the wall and ask him to judge between them — one with ninety-nine ewes, one with a single ewe. He judges quickly, and then realises he has been shown himself. He falls in prostration and turns back.
Sulayman عليه السلام, absorbed in reviewing magnificent horses until the sun sets on his prayer, and his response to his own distraction.
Ayyub عليه السلام, described in four words that are the whole reward: *"We found him patient, an excellent servant."*
And then the beginning of it all: Iblis, told to bow, refusing out of a single sentence — *"I am better than him."* The surah is a study of what pride does to power, and what turning back does for it.
