✦ Why this name
Ya-Sin — two letters opening the surah, whose meaning is left with Allah. It is widely known as "the heart of the Quran".
✦ When it came
Meccan. Its subject is the three things the Makkans were denying: the messenger, the resurrection, and the accountability that follows.
✦ The story
The surah swears that the Prophet ﷺ is among the messengers, on a straight path, and then makes its case in three movements.
First a parable: a town that rejected its messengers, and one man who came *running from the farthest end of the city* to defend them. They killed him. His last words, and his first words after death, are the same generosity: *"I wish my people knew how my Lord has forgiven me."*
Then the signs: dead earth revived, night stripped from day, the sun running its course, the moon in its mansions until it returns like an old date stalk, ships on the sea.
And finally the answer to a man who brought a crumbling bone to the Prophet ﷺ and asked who could bring *this* back. *"Say: He will give it life who produced it the first time."* The surah ends with the whole matter reduced to two words: *"Be — and it is."*
