Luqman — a wise man, not a prophet, whose advice to his son is preserved in the Quran.

Meccan. Luqman was known in Arabia for his wisdom. The Quran keeps the man and records what he told his child.
✦ The story
The heart of this surah is a father talking to his son, and it is one of the best pieces of parenting advice ever written down.
He starts with the biggest thing — *do not associate anything with Allah* — and says it as *"my dear son"*, not as a command. Then: know that Allah's knowledge reaches a mustard seed inside a rock. Establish prayer. Tell people to do good and stop what is wrong. Be patient with what happens to you.
And then the part about how to carry yourself: *do not turn your cheek away from people in scorn, and do not walk the earth exultantly. Be moderate in your pace, and lower your voice — the harshest of sounds is the braying of a donkey.*
Around it, the surah places the command about parents — including a father who is pushing his child toward disbelief: *accompany them in this world with kindness*, and still do not obey them in that.
