The Romans — from the opening prophecy that the defeated Byzantines would win again within a few years.
✦ When it came
Meccan. Persia had crushed Byzantium, and the Makkans took it as a sign that their side would win too. The surah predicted a reversal within three to nine years. It happened — around the time of Badr.
✦ The story
A surah that begins with a falsifiable prediction and then spends the rest of its length on signs so ordinary that people walk past them.
Among them, the verse recited at almost every Muslim wedding: *"And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquillity in them — and He placed between you affection and mercy."*
And its central claim about human beings: there is a fitrah, an original disposition, that Allah made people upon, and the natural religion is the one that matches it. The surah's diagnosis of what goes wrong is unusually direct: *"corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people's hands have earned."*
