The Family of 'Imran — the household of Maryam, her mother, and Yahya and 'Isa عليهما السلام, named in verse 33 among the families Allah chose.
✦ When it came
Madinan. Much of it comes around the battle of Uhud, when a victory turned into a painful defeat because a group left their post. It also records the delegation of Christians from Najran who came to debate the Prophet ﷺ about 'Isa عليه السلام.
✦ The story
Where Al-Baqarah addressed a community finding its feet, Aal-'Imran addresses a community that has just been wounded — and asks what it will believe now.
It opens with the clearest statement in the Quran about how to read the Quran: some verses are decisive and clear, others carry depth, and the person with a diseased heart chases the ambiguous ones looking for trouble. Then comes the story of Maryam and her family — a mother who vowed her child to Allah, a daughter raised in the sanctuary with provision arriving from nowhere, a birth without a father, and a message that a later community turned into something else.
The last third walks straight into Uhud. It does not soften it: seventy dead, the Prophet ﷺ wounded, an army in retreat. And it names the causes without flinching — the archers who left their post, the greed for spoils, the whispering afterwards. Then it lifts: *"Do not lose heart and do not grieve, for you will be superior if you are believers."* The surah closes with people who think about the sky and the earth until it moves them to pray.
