A surah about what happens to a community when talk goes unchecked. It begins with hard boundaries around chastity and accusation — and then names the mechanism of the rumour itself: *you took it on your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you thought it was a trifle, while with Allah it was tremendous.*

It teaches manners that sound small and are not: knock before entering, lower the gaze, do not walk into houses uninvited. And it records the moment Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه swore to cut off support to a relative who had spread the slander — and was answered with *"let them pardon and overlook; do you not love that Allah should forgive you?"* He resumed the support.

At its centre, without warning, is the most luminous passage in the Quran: light upon light, a lamp in a niche, oil that almost glows before fire even touches it.
